Champa Kali

I am Champa Kali. The name “Champa” means white flower. I was born on April 3, 1990. This year, 2023 I became 42 years old. I am still single. Maybe someday I will get a wonderful husband who loves me. I weigh around 9,215 lbs. It has been 15 years since I started living at Sapana Village Lodge. Before that I lived in India where they used me for giving people rides on my back on their wedding ceremony and for carrying wood. I was brought to Sapana Village Lodge by the owner of the Mr. Dhruba Giri. Ever since I came to Sapana Lodge I have been treated with kindness and love. Everyday they feed me good food and I get to live with friends, who share a similar past. Our caretakers (we have 2 each!) take us to graze in the jungle at 6-10 am in the morning and again at 1:30pm to 5pm. The rest of the time we live in our shelter. I take bath 3 times a day. Along with my friends I am involved in animal friendly programs like Elephant feeding, Elephant candy making, Elephant Day Care Program and Elephant Bush Walk. Guests learn how to make fruit baskets and feed us, they can take a walk with us in the bush at sunrise or even have their breakfast in our company! That way we elephants and humans can be together in a calm, friendly way, without us having to carry anything on our backs. This really means a lot to us all.

We are very social animals; we like the company of humans if they treat us with respect and kindness. My favorite foods are sugarcane and bananas. Sometimes I argue with Srijana for food…. thats why people here call me “Grumpy Girl”, but that is fine. I know they still love me for who I am. My caretaker is Saroj. I am very happy at Sapana Village Lodge and thankful to Dhruba, Lena, Donna and their organizations for bringing me here and giving me a new life in a such a wonderful place . I am usually very calm and relaxed and I like to live in isolation. Any place alone is a happy place for me. I love my friends but sometimes they can be very noisy and so I love being by myself. You can come and visit me at Sapana Village Lodge. I will be very happy to see you there.
